Bobsleigh at the 2022 Winter Olympics

The bobsleigh events in 2022 were held at Yanking National Sliding Centre which was newly built for the Beijing Winter Games. Since 2002, the program of the bobsleigh events had remained the same until 2018, when the IOC decided to add a fourth event, the monobob to the women’s programme.

Therefore, at Beijing four events were contested, two each for men and women. Germany dominated, winning three of the four events, only in the monobob did Kaillie Humphries (USA) break their domination and win the gold medal. In that event, Germany did not win a medal of any colour, with Laura Nolte placing fourth as their best finisher.

In the men’s two-man bob, Germany won the only podium sweep at the 2022 Games with Francecso Friedrich capturing gold, Johannes Lochner earning silver, and Christoph Hafer piloting to bronze. Germany’s 1-2-3 was a first in bobsleigh and the first in any sport at Beijing 2022. More than two sleds in any bobsleigh event have only been allowed at the Olympic Winter Games since 2010.

Germany took seven bobsleigh medals at Beijing 2022. The previous record for most medals by a NOC in bobsleigh at a single Olympic Winter Games was four. That tally was achieved on six occasions including Germany in 2002 and 2018.

Germany won nine of the 10 Olympic gold medals awarded at Yanqing National Sliding Centre, the venue for the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton events at these Winter Games. The exception was the victory by Kaillie Humphries (USA) in the inaugural edition of the women’s monobob event.
