There was no clear favorite with 2022 silver medalist Martin Ponsiluoma (SWE) and bronze medalist Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen back, and both already had medals in 2026 as they prepared for the final event on the men’s biathlon programme. There had been two World Cup mass start races in the 2025/26 season, one won by Italy’s Tommaso Giacomel and the other taken by France’s Éric Perrot.
None of the above were close to the podium, as Norway went 1-2 behind Johannes Dale-Skjevdal with gold and the ever present Sturla Holm Lægreid, taking his fifth Olympic medal at Milano-Cortina 2026, though never winning gold. Behind them France’s Quentin Fillon Maillet won bronze for his fourth medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Giacomel was a surprising did not finish, dropping out after the second shooting range, while he was leading the race with two perfect first shootings. A few days later it was revealed that he had heart surgery for cardio-ablation of an abnormal heart rhythm, explaining his withdrawal.
This ended the men’s biathlon programme at MiCo26, with only three nations winning medals – Norway (2-4-2 / 8), France (2-1-2 / 5), and Sweden (1-0-1 / 2).
