The two preliminary groups of the men’s Olympic handball tournament were won by France and Denmark, who would meet in the final. In the quarter-finals Germany surprisingly lost against Egypt, and Spain won 34-33 against Sweden. France and Denmark won their matches quite easily. In the semi-finals France dominated Egypt, and Denmark dominated Spain, both winning 27-23. The two remaining matches were very close as Spain won bronze, depriving Egypt of their first Olympic handball podium, and France won gold against Denmark. The top goalscorer was Denmark’s Mikkel Hansen with 61 goals, who also became the Olympic top goalscorer with 157 goals. The top goalkeeper was Germany’s Johannes Bitter with 33.3 % saves.
