Great Britain’s Charlotte Worthington arrived in Paris 2024 hoping to defend her Olympic title from Tokyo 2020. It was also the second Olympic appearance for the USA’s Hannah Roberts and Perris Benegas, Switzerland’s Nikita Ducarroz, Australia’s Natalya Diehm, and Chile’s Macarena Pérez. The Chinese delegation wasn’t on the scene three years prior, but since then the Chinese had made a dramatic rise to the very top in BMX Freestyle Park.
Deng Yawen (CHN) finished with a score of 92.60 points to capture gold, while Benegas (USA) rose to the occasion, after a fourth-place finish at Tokyo 2020, scoring 90.70 points. Diehm (AUS), fifth at Tokyo 2020, was a surprising third with 88.80 points, becoming the first Australian woman to win a medal in the Olympic BMX freestyle.
Crashes took out a number of leading contenders. Five-time world champion and Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Roberts (USA), the top qualifier to the final, crashed on a front flip in her first run’s final seconds, leaving her out of medal contention, finishing eighth. Worthington (GBR), the defending Olympic champion, failed to qualify for the finals.
