First played in Ireland in 1891, bicycle polo’s growing popularity led to a demonstration match between Ireland and Germany being included in the programme at the 1908 London Olympic Games.
Although the sport has been included in the Asian Games, the chances of it becoming an Olympic sport are very remote, as it does not have an international federation currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Bicycle polo is governed by the International Bicycle Polo Federation, established in 1995, and the sport received official recognition from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2001.
