Biography

After skating in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association in his younger days, ice hockey defenseman Adam Foote joined the Ontario Hockey League’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 1988 and stayed with them until 1991, capturing the league’s championship J. Ross Robertson Cup during his final year. He was drafted by the National Hockey League’s Quebec Nordiques in 1989 and split the 1991-1992 season between the Nordiques (primarily) and the American Hockey League’s Halifax Citadels (6 games). From 1992 through 2004 he skated exclusively with the Nordiques (who became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995) and won Stanley Cup Championships in 1996 and 2001. He also made two appearances at the Winter Olympics for Team Canada during this period, suiting up for six matches in a fourth place finish in 1998, and scoring one goal in six games in 2002, where Canada won its first Olympic gold medal in ice hockey in a half century. After the 2004-2005 NHL lockout he reemerged in the league with the Columbus Blue Jackets and was named team captain in 2005. He made a non-medaling appearance at the 2006 Winter Olympics, skating in six matches, and by the end of the 2007-2008 season was once again a member of the Colorado Avalanche. He was named captain of the team after the 2009 retirement of his Olympic teammate Joe Sakic.
