Biography

Slough boxer Tot Glanville made his international début for Great Britain against France in 1946, when he also won his first major title, the London Area lightweight title. He moved up to welterweight the following year, and proved to be an outstanding prospect when beaten in the ABA final by Johnny Ryan of the Army after the referee stopped the fight in the third round. Glanville was just 20 at the time. The rivalry between Ryan and Glanville continued in 1948, and Glanville was chosen ahead of the ABA and European champion, for the match against Scotland. However, when the two met in the Army v ABA match, Ryan won their welterweight contest with ease, and it was Ryan selected for the Olympics in that division, while Glanville was chosen to fight as a lightweight. However, the two men were both non-starters.

Glanville went on to win the London Area welterweight crown after the Olympics before stepping up a weight division again, to middleweight in 1950. He was also a fine cricketer and was a member of the Littlewick Green Cricket Club in Maidenhead.
