Biography

Mohammed Gaber dabbled in numerous sports, such as tennis, but he is best known as one of the pioneers of Egyptian football. As a railway worker, he helped found the El Sekka El Hadid (Railway) football team as one of only two Egyptians on the squad in 1905. “Sekka” became one of the most prominent clubs of the British colonial era and Gaber remained with the team through 1918, after which he ended his career with El-Mukhtalat (now Zamalek SC). He travelled to Belgium to compete in the football tournament at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, but did not see any playing time with the Egyptian team. He retired from active competition shortly thereafter.
