Chinatsu Mori was a shot putter who broke the Japanese women’s shot put record in 2000 while a student at Kokushikan University. She later bettered that record seven times, leaving her with a best of 18.22 (59-9¼) in 2004. In 2004 she became the first woman to compete in the shot put for Japan at the Olympics since 1964, when the Games were in Tokyo. Within a year after the Athens Olympics, she was diagnosed with a virulent form of appendiceal cancer and died when only 26.
