Biography

Bill Jewell represented the California Kayak Club and attended Long Beach State College. Jewell was also a good swimmer, earning All-American honors as a butterflyer at Long Beach State. In canoeing, he was AAU Champion in K-1 in 1963, in K-2 in 1963-64, with Gert Grigoleit, and the K-4 in 1964, with Grigoleit, Tony Ralphs, and Walter Richards. Jewell raced K-2 at Tokyo, with Bill Smoke replacing Grigoleit in the boat.

Jewell went on to become a swim coach, starting his career at Newport Harbor High School and then coaching Golden West College to five consecutive California State Junior College championships. He was then an assistant at Southern Cal, before becoming CEO and head coach of the Fullerton Aquatics Swim Team (FAST). In 2013, Jewell was banned for three years by USA Swimming following Code of Conduct violations stemming from “a pattern of inappropriate behavior, including making sexually explicit comments toward athletes and other individuals affiliated with the club.” USA Swimming did note that “there was no allegation of or evidence to support inappropriate sexual touching.”
