Gregory Steward competed in canoeing at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. He was runner-up at the US nationals in the C-1 500 and C-1 1,000 in 1986, and won silver medals in the same two events at the 1988 US Olympic Trials. In 1989 he won a silver in the C-1 500 and a bronze in the C-1 1,000 at the US Nationals. Steward competed at the World Championships in 1986 and 1987. He started in canoeing in 1973 as a marathon canoeist. During his career he worked part-time as a mail carrier and a plumber.
