Biography

Charles Russell played rugby union for Sydney side Newton RUFC. A centre, he was first selected for the Australian team in 1907, playing New Zealand in three test matches. The following year, Russell also joined the Wallabies on their first tour of England, which included the 1908 Olympics. The Australians returned home with a gold medal, having beaten a Cornwall side that represented Britain at the Games. Back in Australia, Russell switched to the other code of his sport, rugby league. He played for the newly formed Newton RLFC, and debuted for the Australian national team in 1910 against Great Britain. In 1911 he again toured England. With Newton, Russell won the Australian title twice, in 1910 as a player and in 1933 again as a coach.
