Biography

Marv Arneson, a native of Leacross, Saskatchewan, graduated from high school in Tisdale, Saskatchewan in 1961. An avid track and field athlete in his youth, he first aspired to make the Olympics in that discipline but soon took to boxing as a means to stay in shape after moving from Saskatchewan to Flin Flon, Manitoba for work. Here, he won the novice lightweight Manitoba provincial championship on two occasions. He later attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) to attain certification to become a lab technician, graduating in 1964. He briefly worked in Pinawa, Manitoba, then moved to Edmonton to work for Chemcell.

His success in boxing continued in Alberta, where he won an additional provincial title. In 1968, he was selected as one of the four Canadian boxers to go to the Mexico City Olympics. He competed in the lightweight division where he lost 3-2 to John H. Stracey of Great Britain. While many boxers later turned professional at the time, Arneson expressed no desire to do so, instead opting to focus on his career; later moving to Winnipeg to work at the University of Manitoba, then to Lac du Bonnet where he retired.
