Biography

José Ramón Fernández was a Cuban sports administrator and politician. He served as President of the Cuban Olympic Committee from 1997-2018. Known as the “Gallego Fernández” he served as an advisor to the President of the Councils of State and Ministers and was also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. Fernández served as a General of the Reserve Division of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. For his efforts in service of the Olympic Movement in Cuba, he was awarded the Olympic Order in Silver in 1982.
