Roma Cuyas graduated in law from Barcelona University and went on to become one of the great Catalan sports administrators. A keen athlete and swimmer, he was appointed to the board of the Catalan Athletics Federation in 1962 and progressed through the ranks of local sporting administration before becoming head of the National Sports Council in 1982 (to 1987). He was president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) in 1983-84 and served as commissioner for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, for which he received the Olympic Order (silver) that year, and also the Spanish Government’s gold medal for sporting merit. In 2017, he was honoured with the Creu de Sant Jordi (St. George’s Cross), the second highest civilian award made by the autonomous region of Catalonia.
