Biography

Rodrigo Álvarez Cambras was a Cuban doctor who specialised in orthopedics. Álvarez Cambras was initially interested in pursuing a career in construction engineering, but after seeing his father die he decided to become a doctor. After political unrest in Cuba following the 1952 coup d’état Álvarez Cambras was forced to cut short his university studies to work unpaid in a local hospital. He later went to France where he perfected his orthopedic studies.

Upon his return to Cuba Álvarez Cambras worked at the Frank País International Orthopedic Scientific Complex, devoting his time to save the careers of countless injured athletes including many Cuban Olympians. Álvarez Cambras was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 1997.
