Biography

Swiss lawyer François Carrard served as the Director General of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for 14 years from 1989 to 2003. Carrard graduated as a doctor of law from the University of Lausanne. After working for a law firm in Stockholm for two years, Carrard was admitted to the Bar in 1967 and joined Carrard & Associés. Carrard first worked with the IOC in 1979 when he was appointed as a legal advisor.

In his role of the IOC’s Director General, Carrard developed the IOC administration, making it fit for purpose. Carrard was involved in the formation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), helping to set up the first World Anti-Doping Code. Carrard also worked on revamping the Olympic Charter. While at the IOC, Carrard led the organisation through seven Olympic Games, starting with the 1992 Albertville Olympics and finishing with the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Outside of the IOC Carrard worked with FIFA to reform the governing body of football following the corruption scandal of 2015. Carrard also worked with the International Swimming Federation (FINA) and the International Boxing Association and was a member of the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation.
