Víctor Bignon was born in Santiago; his father was French and his mother was a native of Chile. He was raised in central Santiago and started his athletic career in gymnastics, but soon took to boxing where he quickly found success, winning a national amateur heavyweight title in 1948. He was selected to represent Chile at the London Olympics that same year, competing in the heavyweight division where he lost in the second round to Adam Faul of Canada.
Bignon later went on to win another national amateur heavyweight title in 1951, and a silver medal that same year at the Buenos Aires Pan American Games in the heavyweight class. After his retirement from boxing, he took up glassmaking and was an avid mountaineer, achieving many summits in the Andes, including Cerro El Plomo (5,424 m). He died from a stroke in 2007, leaving his wife and six children.
