Jie Schöpp

Chinese-born German table tennis player Jie Schöpp participated in three consecutive Olympic Games from 1996 at Atlanta to 2004 at Athens. She reached the third round in the women’s singles on all three occasions and the fourth round in the women’s doubles in 1996 and 2000.

Schöpp emigrated to Germany in 1989 and married her German coach the following year. She won several international medals, including gold at the 1996 and 1998 European Team Championships, and in 1997 the bronze medal at the World Team Championships. Schöpp also won bronze in the women’s singles at the Worlds, and bronze medals at the 1994, 1996 and 2000 Europeans. In 1994 and 2003 she won the TOP12 tournament in Europe.

Schöpp won 117 international caps in total, and her highest world ranking was #13 in 1994. She later turned to coaching, firstly at the Rhineland Table Tennis Association, and then as the German women’s national team coach from 2012-21. In 2016, she was named Coach of the Year.
