Biography

Zehaye Bahta and his friend Mesfen Tesfaye were pioneers of the sport of cycling in their native Eritrea, becoming the first two cyclists to compete at the Olympic Games, doing so under the flag of Ethiopia at Melbourne 1956. Competing in the individual and team road race events at Melbourne, Zehaye finished in 38th place in the former and in ninth with his other three teammates in the latter.

A member of the Gruppo Ciclistico Africa located in Asmara, Zehaye was also a member of the Ethiopian Military in the 1950s. He worked as a merchant.
