In 1964 Mexican cyclist Adolfo Belmonte was part of the quartet that finished 17th in the 100 kilometres team time trial at the Tokyo Olympics. Belmonte then became a mainstay in the Mexican cycling team on both the road and track for the rest of the decade. In 1966 he won gold in the 4,000 metres team pursuit at the Central American and Caribbean Games, followed by silver in the same event and in the road team time trial at the 1967 Pan American Games. One year later he competed at his home Olympics in Mexico City, riding in the 100 kilometres team time trial on the road and the 4,000 metres team pursuit in the velodrome. Belmonte had further success at the Central American and Caribbean Games, winning two bronze medals in 1970.
