James William Davies was born in Vancouver in 1934 where he began his cycling career in his mid-teens. Davies was a talented rider throughout the Pacific Northwest, winning provincial and national titles on both the road and on the track. In 1954 he was selected to represent Canada at the British Empire Games in his hometown where he came ninth in the track time trial. He also rode in the 1,000 metres sprint at the Games but was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Two years later he participated at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, finishing 17th in the 1,000 metres time trial on the velodrome and being one of three Canadian cyclists to compete in the road race. Davies continued his love of the sport all throughout his life and was still riding into his eighties. His uncle Jim Davies rode in track events at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
