In the early 1970s Spanish cyclist Jaime Huélamo won amateur races in both France and Spain to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. Huélamo competed in the road race at the 1972 München Games, initially finishing third. After the race, however, he was disqualified after a positive doping test for Coramine, a stimulant. Because fourth-place finisher Bruce Biddle (NZL) was not tested for drugs, no bronze medal was awarded. A few days before the road race Huélamo had also placed 12th with his compatriots in the team time trial at the Games. In 1973 he turned professional, winning stages at both the Volta a Catalunya and the Tour of Andalusia the following year. In 1975 he finished third in the road race at the national championships before retiring from the sport.
