László Mahó was one of the defining figures in Hungarian cycling during the 1960s, winning multiple national titles and one edition of the Tour de Hongrie. Mahó began his career with Csepel Vasas SC in 1957, winning his first Hungarian title four years later in the 100 kilometres team time trial. In 1964 he qualified for the Olympics in Tokyo, finishing 83rd in the road race, only 0.2 seconds behind the race winner. He also finished 12th in the team time trial at the Games with his compatriots. The following year Mahó had the best result of his career, winning the overall classification at the Tour de Hongrie, despite not winning any stages, or even finishing on the podium until the end of the race.
In 1966 Mahó won the team cross-country race at the Hungarian championships, winning again in 1967 and 1969. During the decade he rode at three editions of the amateur road world championships in both the road race and the team time trial. His best performance came in the latter in 1963, finishing eighth overall. One year later he placed 47th in the road race, just over one minute behind the race winner.
Mahó ended his cycling career in 1969, earning a coaching qualification at the same time. He then worked with young cyclists as a coach and cycling expert. His students included Tamás Lengyel and the three-time Olympian László Bodrogi.
