Biography

Warren Scarfe was a cyclist who competed at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, on both the road and track, with a best finish of fourth in the 1956 kilometre time trial. He won a silver medal in that event at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Scarfe was twice an Australian Champion, winning the kilo time trial in 1956 and the individual pursuit in 1958.

Scarfe made his living as a draftsman. In 1961 while training, he swerved to avoid a pedestrian and crashed, fracturing his skull. He recovered but fell again while training in 1964 and died of head injuries. Scarfe’s son, David, competed at the 1980 Moskva Olympics and the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. In his honor, the St. George Club stages an annual Warren Scarfe Memorial Race.
