Biography

Finnish cyclist Raimo Suikkanen competed on both the road and track during the 1960s and 1970s. Suikkanen was a seven-time national champion, including winning the individual time trial title in 1969, and set multiple Finnish records on the track. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics he competed in the road race but failed to finish the course and finished in 19th place in the 100 kilometres team time trial. Also at the Mexico City Games he rode in the velodrome in the 1,000 metres time trial, finishing in 23rd place out of the 32 cyclists who competed.

In 1969 and 1970 Suikkanen was named as the Finnish cyclist of the year. He returned to the track for the 1972 Olympics in München where he rode in the 4,000 metres individual pursuit, but did not advance past the qualifying heats.

During the winter months in Finland Suikkanen skied for the Lahti Ski Club and finished in 15th place at the Salpausselkä Games in 1966. After his retirement from sport he became a sports masseuse, working in both Finland and Spain.
