Biography

During his cycling career Gyula Gere represented both Postás SE and Csepel SC in Budapest before becoming a member of the Hungarian national team. Gere competed throughout the 1930s and 1940s, achieving a decent set of results, with his first major win coming in 1935 with victory at the Košice–Tatry–Košice race. Gere was selected to ride in the road race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but did not start the event. In 1939 he won the brutal two-day race Budapest–Košice–Budapest and finished fifth at the Tour of Poland. Gere had consistent results in the Tour of Hungary, finishing second in 1942 and 1943, and fourth in 1949.

On the track Gere won the national team pursuit title in 1946 with teammates Ferenc Pelvássy and Gyula Csikós. After his competitive career he worked as a coach for Csepeli Vasas and the Hungarian national team.
