Biography

Born in Milano near the Vigorelli velodrome, Marino Vigna’s amateur career veered between road and track but it was in the velodrome where he shone most brightly.

After a bright start to the 1960 season where he was regularly competitive in some of Italy’s amateur road classics, Vigna was included in the Italian pursuit team for the Roma Olympic Games. The team broke the Olympic record twice on the way to the final and then survived a precarious first few laps to beat Germany to the Olympic title.

Vigna joined the professional ranks for the 1961 season with the Italian Philco team but made little impact until he joined the famous Legnano team in 1963. He won a stage of the Giro d’Italia in his only year with the team.

Moving to the Pasta Gazzola Mondovì he won the biggest victory of his career at the Tre Valli Varesine as well as a stage of the Tour of Romandie in 1964 before riding the first of his three Giro d’Italias the following year. Vigna won Milano-Torino in 1966 but retired at the end of 1967 and began a career in team management with the Faema team. He spent three years working as sporting director with such riders as Eddy Merckx, Patrick Sercu, and Vittorio Adorni before moving on to take a position with the Italian national track team. Vigna eventually rose to be technical director of the Italian Cycling Federation before leaving in 1990 to take up a position with Bianchi cycles.
