In addition to his achievements as a hockey player Raoul Daufresne de la Chevalerie was also a very good football and tennis player as well as an excellent rider. He played from 1903-07 for Cercle Brugge and was also the club’s president from 1905-07, but also played for several other football clubs in Brugge through 1912, playing in a total of 98 matches in the first division and scoring 13 goals. At Antwerp in 1920, he managed the Belgian football team at the Games and participated as a hockey player at the same Olympics.
In World War I, Daufresne de la Chevalerie served as an infantry officer, eventually reaching captain. At the beginning of World War II, he was captured by the Germans, but was able to escape. In the UK, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and was Commander-in-Chief of the Free Belgian Forces in 1941-42. After the war he was briefly a military attaché in Praha. In 1959 he was raised to the hereditary nobility. Guy Daufresne de la Chevalerie, his son from his first marriage, later became a Belgian ambassador to Japan in 1946.
