Biography

A police constable, Walter Chaffe joined the Metropolitan Police force in February 1891 at the age of 21. He was a member of the K Division tug-of-war team, and in addition to winning a bronze medal at the 1908 Olympics, and a silver medal four year later, he won many competitions with the K Division team. Chaffe was stationed at Plaistow and also pulled for the Plaistow Sub-Division team which included several future fellow Olympians. Chaffe was the honorary secretary of the London police tug-of-war team at the time of them winning the British Police Championship in 1913. Sadly, Chaffe’s collection of medals, and other sporting memorabilia were stolen from his daughter-in-law’s house in Plaistow.
