Most of Morocco’s delegation at the 1976 Montréal Olympics did not compete following the boycott of the Games by African nations, in protest of New Zealand’s participation after their rugby team had earlier toured South Africa. Moroccan judoka Mustapha Belahmira was scheduled to compete against José Gomes of Portugal in the lightweight event but did not start. Belahmira was a Moroccan champion who went on to become a coach for the national team.
