It was believed for many years that Alfred Read was not a member of the 1920 City of London Police gold medal-winning tug-of-war team. Information came to light in 2022, however, which confirmed he was in the team. The son of a Bethnal Green restaurant owner, Read reached the rank of sergeant in the City of London Police. During World War I he was a regimental sergeant major in the 3rd Reserve of the London Regiment.
