Biography

A member of the famous Amat hockey dynasty, Jaime and his three brothers Francisco, Juan and Pedro made 10 Olympic appearances between them. Between 1960 and 1980, there was at least one member of the family on the Spanish Olympic team. To continue the family tradition, his son Jaime and nephew Pol won silver medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and competed in eight Games between 1992-2012.

The four Amat siblings all played for their hometown club Egara, in the Catalonian city of Terrassa. The club was founded by their father Pere in 1935, and it went on to become one of the most famous field hockey clubs in Spain. Jaime Amat was at one time president of the club. He made 50 appearances for the national team and, had it not been for work commitments, would have gone to the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Domestically, he won five league titles, and eight cup competitions at club level, and in 1969 was a member of the Egara team that won the first European Cup in Bruxelles. The club retained the trophy the following year.

Ironically, the Spanish Olympic Committee had a tribute to the Amat family planned for a date at the end of February 2020. Because the tribute, in recognition of the family’s achievements, was scheduled for just 10 days after the death of Jaime, it was postponed until a later date.
