Biography

Ian Taylor, who was educated at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Hartlebury and Borough Road College, was, at his peak, the outstanding goalkeeper in world hockey. He made his international début in 1977 and went on to play for England 91 times and Great Britain on a record 80 occasions. Taylor won gold and bronze medals at the Olympics, a silver medal in the World Cup and a silver and bronze medal in the European Cup. A marketing manager, Taylor played for East Grinstead for the major part of his career. After his playing retirement, Taylor held a number of honorary roles within sports administration including Minister’s nominee on the Sports Council, director of the GB Ice Hockey Board, and as a director of the British Olympic Association. He was a commentator for BBC Sport from 1988-1996, and later became the chief executive for SportScotland.
