Biography

Natascha Keller had a long field hockey heritage. She was the granddaughter of Erwin Keller and his wife Helga Akermann, the daughter of Carsten Keller, the sister of Florian Keller, and the stepsister of Andreas Keller. Following the marriage of Florian to his teammate Navina Omilade, Natascha then became her sister-in-law, and also sister-in-law of Louisa Walter after she married Andreas. The Keller family was only the third family of three generations to win Olympic medals, after the Swedish sailing family Lund, and Hungarian fencing family Bogen/Gerevich.

Natascha Keller was elected World Hockey Player of the Year in 1999. She was the first female hockey player who participated in five consecutive Olympic Games, from 1996-2012. She won the gold medal at Athens in 2004 and was the German flagbearer at the 2012 London Games.

Natascha won further international medals with a bronze at the 1995 Europeans Championships, European Indoor gold in 1998, and bronze at the Worlds that same year. In 1999 she added a silver medal at the Europeans, and in 2003 was European Indoor champion, and third at the outdoor Europeans. In 2006, she won the Champions Trophy, and in 2003 and 2011 the World Indoor title. In total, she played 425 international matches (including 36 indoor) from 1994-2012, scoring 209 goals. Domestically, she played with Berliner HC, helping them win seven German national titles 1994, 1996, 1999-2000, 2005-06 and 2008, the European Champions Cup in 1997, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 2008.
