Biography

Michael Krause played 82 international hockey (field) matches for West Germany from 1966-76. With the West German team he won the 1970 European title and received a bronze medal at the 1973 World Championships. Krause competed at three Olympic Games, winning gold in 1972, and scoring the deciding goal against Pakistan. In Mexico City he finished fourth in 1968, losing the bronze medal match against India, 2-1. In 1968 East and West Germany played their only international match in a preliminary round, with West Germany winning 3-2. At Montréal in 1976 the team placed fifth.

From 1993-99 Krause was president of the German Hockey Federation, and then became their honorary president. For many years he was a member of the National Olympic Committee for Germany. Krause received the Olympic Order from IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch, and from 2000-03 was Chairman of the Board of the Willi Daume Foundation. Krause also became a member of the Rules Committee of the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH). By profession, he was a lawyer and notary.
