Amar Singh Mangat

Amar Singh Mangat was born in Naro Moru, British Kenya, in 1935. He played hockey for his school, and in 1951, he joined the Sikh Union Club Nairobi. During the 1950s, he played for Nairobi against international touring sides from South Africa, Rhodesia and England. In 1958, as a member of the Asian Sports Association, he was part of the team that won the Kenya Cup. The following year, his team won the M R D’Souza Gold Cup, the top hockey competition in East Africa. He was on the team that won the Gold Cup seven times during the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1962, he earned his first international cap when Kenya toured Pakistan. Two years later, the Kenyan team also toured India, with Mangat being selected to represent Kenya at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Following the Olympics, he continued to play on international tours during the 1960s, including further matches in Pakistan, as well as Europe and Zambia.

In 1968, Mangat was named the Sportsman of the Year by the Sikh Union Club Nairobi, and he was made a life member of the club the following year.

Mangat migrated to Canada in 1969, playing hockey for Alberta until 1972, and becoming an umpire until 1976.
