Thomas Healy was the son of a clerk and attended courses at the National College of Art and Design at the age of twelve. Later he was listed there as a student. In 1953, he received a diploma from the High School of Commerce in Rathmines, a suburb of Dublin. Healy worked as a journalist when he emigrated to Canada in 1957, where he married and had four children. He lived in the Scarborough neighbourhood of Toronto and was active in public relations. His supposed entry, the painting Little Ships (oil on canvas, 57 x 44 cm), was only mentioned in Irish sources and was not included in the catalogue of the art exhibition.
