Biography

Mohammed Zulfiqaruddin started his footballing career with Hyderabad Sporting Club in 1954 before joining the Police Department where he played for both Hyderabad City Police and Andhra Police. He won the Rovers Cup four times, Durand Cup twice and DCM Trophy once. He also represented Hyderabad (later Andhra Pradesh) in the Santosh Trophy, for Indian regional state associations, and won it three times 1956/57, 1957/58 and 1965/66. His goal tally in the competition was 15, including one in the 1965/66 final against West Bengal at Quilon (now Kollam). He was captain of both the Andhra Pradesh State side and the Andrha State police team.

Zulfiqaruddin made his full international debut for India in a 2-0 win over Singapore in the 1959 Merdeka Cup, in Malaysia. It was the first of three full caps for the striker, who scored one international goal. As a teenager, in 1956, he was part of the Indian squad at the Melbourne Olympics, although he did not play, losing his place to Chuni Goswami. Likewise, Zulfiqaruddin did not play when India emulated their 1956 performance, by finishing fourth at the Asian Games at Tokyo two years later. When he retired from the police force, Zulfiqaruddin had attained the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
