Biography

From 1924 to 1929, Juliusz Studnicki studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Felicjan Kowarski, with whom he transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts in Warszawa. From 1932, he worked as a drawing teacher at a vocational school in Przemyśl. He was a co-founder of the “Pryzmat” (“Prism”) group.

After his marriage with Krystyna Łada, the couple went to Paris for one year. During World War II, Studnicki was arrested during a raid on the Kraków “Artists’ Café”, and was a prisoner in Auschwitz, but was released through the efforts of his family.

In 1945, he first worked in the Krakow Association of Polish Artists as a housing officer and then became one of the co-founders of the State College of Fine Arts in Sopot. There, Studnicki lectured and was appointed full professor in 1955. Until 1962, he was the head of the Painting Department and acted as dean from 1949-50. From 1962, he was professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warszawa, to where he moved permanently in 1963.

Like his wife, Studnicki created paintings, drawings and murals following the aesthetics of post-Impressionist colorism, especially landscapes, decorative still lifes and portraits. During the period of socialist realism, he was considered a leading figure of the so-called Sopot School. After a brief episode of abstract painting, he also engaged unofficially in satire and grotesque.

Together with his wife, Studnicki participated in the polychrome paintings of tenement houses in Gdansk and Warszawa. In addition to distinguished art awards, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross and later the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

The painting Regatta, jointly produced by Łada and Studnicki, received an award in the Polish pre-Olympic competition. Painted in oil on canvas, the 89.8 x 127.5 cm size painting is in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw.
