For more than a decade Zakir Hussain played in goal for the Pakistan national field hockey team. In 1956 Hussain played in all five of Pakistan’s matches at the Melbourne Olympics, where the team won silver after losing 1–0 to arch-rivals India in the final. After the Olympics he won back-to-back golds at the Asian Games when Pakistan won the field hockey tournaments in Tokyo in 1958 and Jakarta in 1962. Hussain missed out on the Olympics in both 1960 and 1964, before returning to the Games in 1968 in Mexico City. This time the team went one better than his previous appearance at the Games when Pakistan won gold, beating Australia 2–1 in the final.
