Biography

Tjerk Leegstra was born in Surabaya, in what was then called the Dutch East Indies, but later became Indonesia. He became a US citizen in June 1955 in White Plains, New York. Leegstra attended Delft University in the Netherlands, and worked in 1956 as an airlines technical representative. He played for the New York Athletic Club in the US. Leegstra was 44-years-old when he played in the 1956 Olympics. He had been a star player in the Netherlands from the late 1920s until World War II.
