Marq Mellor grew up in a hockey (field) family as his father, Anthony Mellor, was a high school coach in Bronxville, NY and led his team to an undefeated state championship in 1994. Maruquin played for his father and then played at SUNY Cobleskill. Mellor played for the US National Team from the late 1980s through 1997. In addition to his 1996 Olympic appearance he won bronze medals at the 1991 and 1995 Pan American Games. Mellor went into coaching hockey, initially at the high school level, and then at the New York Hockey Club.
