Biography

Shirley Netherway, later Parker, was a leading foilist in the first half of the 1960s. She made her Great Britain début at 1960 Roma Olympics and then went to the Tokyo Games four years later. She competed in the team and individual events without medalling. At the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Kingston, Jamaica, however, she won gold in the team event and individual silver, losing to compatriot Janet Wardell-Yerburgh (formerly Janet Bewley-Cathie).

Originally a member of the Latista Fencing Club, Netherway joined the Polytechnic Club in 1958 and that year finished third in the coveted Desprez Cup for the second time, before winning the trophy ahead of Mildred Durne in 1960. Parker was the British foil champion in 1964 and 1966 and runner-up to Polytechnic team-mate Janet Bewley-Cathie in 1965. She beat Bewley-Cathie in the final when she regained the title in 1966. Parker also competed in the World Fencing Championships three times in the 1960s, and reached the quarter-final at Paris in 1965.
