Biography

Gay D’Asaro fenced at U Cal Santa Barbara from 1972-74, and then at San Jose State in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was US Champion with the foil in 1974 and 1978. D’Asaro won bronze medals in team foil at the 1975 and the 1979 Pan American Games. At San Jose State she earned a PhD degree, writing a thesis on “A History of the Amateur Fencers League of America.” Starting fencing as Gay Jacobsen, she married her coach Michael D’Asaro, who fenced at the 1960 Olympics, although they later divorced. Gay D’Asaro is a member of the UC Santa Barbara Hall of Fame and the US Fencing Association Hall of fame.
