Biography

Josef Losert, Jr. grew up in Mödling, Austria, where he learned fencing from his father, who was a military fencing master. Josef, Jr. won Austrian titles in foil in 1932-33, 1935, and 1943, and in sabre in 1935, 1937, and 1943. He also competed in luge and was Austrian Champion in luge doubles in 1933.

After Hitler’s Armies annexed Austria, Losert became a member of the SS (Schutzstaffel), and won the German foil title in 1943. After World War II, Losert won Austrian titles in foil in 1949-50 and in sabre in 1950. He then became a university fencing master in Freiburg, Germany. Like his father, Losert trained his son in fencing and Roland Losert competed at three Olympics (1964-72) in foil and épée.

His daughter, Ingrid Losert, did not compete at the Olympics but was bronze medalist in foil individual at the World Junior Championships in 1975 representing Austria and then represented West Germany and was silver medalist in team foil in 1981 and 1983 and bronze medalist in 1979 and 1982.
