Biography

Jean-Ernest Ramez was a French fencer who specialised in the sabre during the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s. Starting out at the 1959 Summer Universiade in Torino, Ramez won an individual bronze before winning individual and team gold later the same year at the Mediterranean Games in Beirut. Four years later he won another medal at the Mediterranean Games with an individual silver in Napoli. His performances secured himself a spot on the French team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Ramez narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal after France and Poland tied on eight wins apiece in the bronze medal match, with Poland taking third place 60-59 on hits.

In 1965 and 1967 Ramez competed at the World Fencing Championships, winning a team bronze on each occasion. One year later he competed at his second Olympics as part of the French team at the Mexico City Games. History repeated itself with France once again missing out on bronze after losing to Hungary in the third-place match.
