Biography

Lida Scott became interested in archery in the 1870s and won her first titles, the Ohio State Championship, in 1881 and 1882. In the spring of 1883 she married Millard C. Howell and also won her first national championship. Lida Scott Howell won 17 national championships of the 20 she contested between 1883 and 1907, surely one of the most amazing records in any sport among American Olympians. Her scores in the 1895 championship set records which were not broken until 1931 – 36 years later. As an archer, she was clearly a woman ahead of her time.
