Biography

Richard Oldcorn began his long fencing career in the early 1950s. At the 1966 British Empire & Commonwealth Games, he won gold fencing for the English sabre team. He represented Great Britain at three Olympics (1964-1972). He was unable to compete in 1976 (due to injury), but was present as a member of the jury. At the 1980 Olympics, where he was Captain both of the overall Great Britain fencing team and Sabre team, as well as entered for the individual sabre, he chose to help Mark Slade, fencing at his first Olympic Games during the first round rather than compete himself.

Having already served as the captain/selector for the British sabre team since 1971, he became Britain’s fencing team captain in 1978, being unable to compete himself due to a back injury. Following a spinal fusion operation in 1980 and his emigration to Australia in 1983, his back improved and allowed Oldcorn to return to international competition. Now representing Australia, he won a silver medal in the 1990 Commonwealth Championships, and competed in his 15th World Championships that same year. Oldcorn participated in World Veterans Championships; in 2002 he won gold in the Veteran Commonwealth 60+. In the 3 World Masters Games to have included fencing, he was placed third each time.
