Biography

German Hans Halberstadt fenced at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, but was eliminated in the semi-finals in individual épée, losing all bouts in his pool. He was also eliminated with the épée team in the second round, but finished fourth with the sabre team. In 1922 and 1930 Halberstadt was German épée champion. With Fechtclub Offenbach he was also German team sabre champion in 1924 and 1925.

As a Jew Halberstadt had to leave Germany in 1938 and emigrated to San Francisco (USA), where he later started his own fencing school. Halberstadt became 1940 US sabre champion in 1940, both in the individual and with the team.
